What tres leches is
The name is literal. The sponge is soaked in a mix of three milks — usually evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and cream or whole milk — so the crumb holds liquid instead of drying out like a plain butter cake.
The topping is typically whipped cream, not a heavy buttercream. Fruit or a drizzle on top is common; it should not hide a dry cake underneath.

A little milk in the box is a good sign. The crumb should look moist. If it eats like dry vanilla cake with cream on top, it missed the point.
